First mistake, you see a plant & buy it without knowing it’s basic needs. Know what area in your home it will thrive in. Find out what type of light it needs and how often in needs to be watered. Second simple mistake is not adding variety. You don’t want all the same plants in a group. Mix it up. Create a beautiful display with different heights, textures, colors and shapes. Third, don’t crowd or overpower one area with an abundance of plants to where it looks cluttered. Fourth, don’t leave your new beautiful plant in it’s original plastic container. Get creative and add a coat of paint to a cheap plastic container or a terracotta pot from the craft store.
